CAN Unveils 2025 Cricket Calendar: A Big Year Ahead for Nepal Cricket

Women’s Cricket: A Year Full of Competitive Matches

Nepal’s women’s cricket team has already kickstarted the year with a quadrangular series in Uganda featuring Namibia and Hong Kong. Their next stop is Bhutan in April, followed by the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifiers in Thailand in May—an event that could serve as a major stepping stone for Nepalese women’s cricket.

June will see the team competing in the Women’s Emerging Team Asia Cup, giving them exposure to top-level competition. Later in the year, Nepal will be part of a tri-series in Malaysia with UAE, setting the stage for another major event—a pentangular series in December where they will take on teams like Uganda, Namibia, UAE, and the Netherlands.

In an exciting development, CAN has announced the first-ever 50-over Women’s Elite Cup in October, a crucial initiative that could strengthen women’s domestic cricket and help build a strong pipeline of young talent.

Men’s Cricket: Aiming for Greater Heights

The men’s national team will start their international assignments with a tour of Sri Lanka in July, preparing for the high-stakes T20 World Cup Qualifiers set to take place in Oman in October. To further sharpen their skills, Nepal is planning additional tours to India, Australia, and UAE in August and September, which should provide quality match practice before the qualifiers.

June will see Nepal competing in the CWC League 2 (2024-27) tri-series in Scotland, where they will face tough opposition from Scotland and the Netherlands. Domestically, CAN is focused on expanding professional cricket, with a player retention process and mini-auction for the Nepal Premier League (NPL) scheduled for June and August. The dates for the second edition of NPL will be finalized after getting approval from the International Cricket Council (ICC).

To further boost grassroots cricket, CAN has also planned a National School Championship in May targeting SEE graduates, aiming to identify and nurture young cricketing talent.

How This Calendar Contributes to Nepal Cricket’s Growth

1. Increased International Exposure – The men’s and women’s teams will play against stronger cricketing nations, helping them gain experience and confidence. Tours to Sri Lanka, UAE, Australia, India, and Scotland will provide much-needed exposure to competitive conditions.

2. Women’s Cricket on the Rise – The inclusion of a 50-over Women’s Elite Cup and multiple international series indicates serious investment in women’s cricket, which could inspire more girls to take up the sport.

3. Better Domestic Structure – The continuation of NPL and the introduction of new domestic tournaments will ensure that players have regular competitive matches, improving their overall skill set.

4. Youth Development – The National School Championship is a brilliant move, as it will help scout young cricketing talents early, possibly producing future stars for the national team.
